One fall night in 2007, i had just picked up my new car at Habberstad BMW in Huntington. It was about a quarter to eight in the evening. I was so happy with my new car. My family had all moved to Florida at this point and I was feeling a bit lonely. I remembered that Diane was just a few minutes away in Dix Hills. I drove over knowing the route like the back of my hand. I rang the doorbell. No answer. I called Di and she said Stephen is that you outside? She quickly came to the door in her fabulous PJ Salvage pajamas and robe. I said Di, I’m sorry to drop in unannounced but I just picked up my new car and was in the neighborhood. She came out to see it and wished me well.
She said let’s get inside. I said I’m hope I’m not interrupting you. She said no don’t worry i was watching Dancing with the Stars but I’m taping it!!! We laughed.
She said let’s celebrate with l ice cream sundaes! I said i couldn’t possibly. She went to the freezer and said one scoop or two?
Before i knew it we were making spumoni sundaes and laughing about who knows what. We sat and chatted for an hour. I didn’t miss my family so much anymore. I felt like I was with a member of my family. Diane gave me that hug that i needed. A hug she gave me many times over the years.
There’s so many stories but this one just sticks out as a favorite for me.
As everyone knows, when you sat in Di’s kitchen, laughs were abundant, your stomach was full, calories didn’t matter, and you went home with leftovers and love.
She always made everyone feel special, but it was she that was always so special. We’ll meet up again one day Di! Love you!

Dear Gina and Angela, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your mom. I’ve been thinking about all the wonderful memories we shared growing up and so many of them include her. She was the supporting role that enabled all of our childhood dreams to come true. How lucky was I to have a best friend across the street and also the ability to consider Mrs. DiGennaro as a second mother. She had such a warm smile and a contagious laugh that made everything brighter. I think you may have inherited that from her! I always saw her, keeping a close eye on us in the pool for hours and keeping tabs on us as we rode our bikes on the sidewalk, the years and years and years of carpooling to Vic DiAmore dance classes and recitals… The sleepover parties, playing Zelda on Atari, Creating dance routines in your garage…Are just a few highlights from our childhood that I will never forget. I can still taste the peanut butter and Wonderbread sandwiches and the vanilla sandwich cookies with small cups of fruit punch she would serve us after we played for hours. She had a way of making the simplest things so special and making me feel so special. She did all of this while managing to have the cleanest living room in the world. And also the neatest toy closet I ever saw! She was a wonderful mom, a wonderful role model, smart, kind independent. I hope these memories will bring you a little comfort during this difficult time. Words cannot express how grateful I am to have had her in my life and you too. Please know I’m here for you, Whatever you need. Sending so much love- Melissa.
