Gene left a legacy of fine character, warmth & sincerity whenever gathered with his Master Gardener classmates. Whether in training at the Cornell Co-op Extension or as part of our MG team on the grounds of Old Westbury Gardens we joyfully looked forward toward reuniting with his presence. With fond remembrance, multi baci, dorme bene paisano. Maria Mallman, MG
(It was through my daughter touring the Gardens yesterday that the docents shared Gene's passing)

I was so sad to just read about Gene’s passing. I got suspicious when I didn’t get a Christmas card from him as his was always the first to arrive.
I was blessed to have Gene as my right hand. In the mid ‘90’s, I was the manager for the Master Gardener program at Cornell, but I had a simultaneous national assignment that required a lot of travel. Gene immediately stepped in and was there every week (long after he graduated from the course) to administer tests, answer questions, and whatever else needed to be addressed. I am forever grateful for all the time and dedication he gave to the Master Gardener program and Cornell Cooperative Extension. Thorough and thoughtful in all that he did is how I will always remember him.
I loved going to lunch with him and the late Claire Buschel. We’d meet at his house and head to lunch. I would laugh every time he’d tell me he had to straighten up the house before his housekeeper arrived. Immaculate always (I never understood why he needed a housekeeper) especially the mirrored backsplash in his kitchen.
A true gentleman and gentle man.
My sincerest sympathies to his family.

Gene mentored and promoted a lot of people during his career; sometimes he saw things in people that others missed.
Baldwin was lucky to have him.
Once, when I was President of the Bruins Boosters, he spoke at our dinner and called me his friend.
That was 30 years ago, it still feels nice.
Rest in Peace and thanks for all you have done.

In memory of Gene: We knew him as an Educator- he was Pam's 4th grade teacher at Lenox and later as the long time Superintendent of Baldwin Public Schools. Our mother Joyce worked as his administrative assistant for many years-sweetening him up with her famous and his favorite lemon bars.
Gene was also an important founding member of the Baldwin Foundation for Education. Melissa has the honor of awarding the Gene Lanzaro scholarship every year.
Most importantly, Gene was a family friend. We are all going to miss his thoughtful annual holiday gift -cheese made by Trappist Monks, which became part of our family's special Christmas food traditions.
Thinking of all of the Lanzaro family.

Condolences to Gene’s family and all who had the honor to know him. Caring, compassionate, and powerful Mr Lanzaro was the ultimate educator. I was so fortunate to have him as my 4th grade teacher at Lenox school in the early 60’s . His commitment to teaching and getting through to each student was a remarkable gift. Throughout my life I often thought just how much Gene Lanzaro guided me on a path to become a better person. His real gift was I was just one of so, so many he touched. Sadly missed, never forgotten, a beautiful life well lived. Peace to Gene’s family. Mitch kessler

As Chairman of Old Westbury Gardens, I want to add my condolences to Gene's family as well as my grateful thanks for his time at the Gardens for so many years. I knew Gene quite well, probably for thirty years, and valued him highly as an important and sought after expert in the history and detail of every part of the house, gardens and collections. Gene could speak for an hour, easily, about just the fireplaces and was a top garden docent, sharing his love and passion for horticulture with hundreds of visitors. I was always so happy to bring friends and potential supporters to the Gardens when he was the tour guide. Gene was an enthusiastic promoter for the mission and I'm sure often made a great deal of difference to the chance that the Gardens would receive a gift and often affected its size.
Gene's high standards will always remain part of the fabric of the education program at the Gardens. He had a passion for educating as well as for horticulture. His legacy stretches to many of us who learned from him and increased our understanding and knowledge of Old Westbury Gardens through his tours.
Along with everyone who knew him, we, at Old Westbury Gardens will miss Gene Lanzaro. However, his valued legacy will last far into the future. We were lucky to have known him and to have lived in his world and been deserving of his time and his regard. Carol Large

So sorry for your loss. As a master gardener student 10 years ago, Gene was one of my teachers. At first I thought he was a little tough and gruff but then the twinkle in his eye came out and I saw the fun side of him! I’ve since Seen him at some of our events and at Dee’s nursery. One time someone asked him a question and I was standing there and he said Karen is my best student she’ll answer that. And I looked at him like really, are you kidding me?! So we had a good laugh. Rest in peace Gene, I’m glad I got to know you

My deepest sympathy. Gene added an aire of sophistication to everyday living. It was my pleasure to be able to have shared precious moments with him as he guided us with his knowledge and professionalism of gardens and gardening at Old Westbury Gardens. I taped Gene when he trained us in proper docent procedure for both house and garden tours and while driving to Old Westbury Gardens for my tours, I would play his tapes in the car. He is missed dearly and my deepest sympathy to all who knew him.
Please stay safe everyone.

Gene was a kind man, a wonderful neighbor and a great friend to my parents. We were lucky enough to live across the street in direct view of his beautiful home and the garden that he loved so much. I know he found such joy tending to it and I honestly don't think I ever remember him being outside without his pruning shears in hand! He always asked me about my children, was the first on the block to plant a Crepe Myrtle and always mailed his Christmas Cards out the day after Thanksgiving. His passing saddens me but I am thankful he is at peace.
