Just learned about this today. Can't believe that the Warrior Gene is gone! He was always the strongest, fastest, best at any and all sports. In New Hyde Park at Parkville, you knew if Gene was on your team, you were going to win, otherwise you might as well give up before it started. I had the great pleasure to be on the 1st organized soccer team on LI with him. We were all at a Little League All-Star picnic and one of the fathers brought over a soccer ball. None of us knew what it was and we started kicking it around. Of course Gene was the best, right from the first day...
One day at Parkville, Gene made me mad about something and being hot headed and a bit crazy I challenged him to a fight after school. Now keep in mind Gene was as developed then as your typical HS football player and I was a scrawny 8-9 year old. He met me after school on the usual place for fights, the lawn outside the library, and refused to fight. Every time I charged him or threw a punch at him, he just moved out of the way. He wouldn't engage with me (luckily for me and my face). After this, we were even closer than before.
Rest in peace Gene, although I don't think he will be doing much resting as I am sure he is on every team in Heaven, and they are all winning!
Love ya man, David Weintraub

My deepest sympathy goes out to your entire family. It was a pleasure growing up and knowing Gene. From my earliest memories at Parkville through High School he was always the leader of the pack. The world has lost a great man too early in life. My condolences go out to you. In his memory, before the the Oct 18th GNN/GNS Football game there will be a moment of silence... With your permission we would like to read out his name. Contact me via facebook if this is OK.

Gene, I have extremely fond memories growing up with you and can still recall our time together from recess at Parkville to teammates in high school. To paraphrase from the movie Stand By Me, “Although it has been an extremely long time since I have seen you, I know I'll miss you forever.”
May you have eternal light, peace and happiness. My deepest sympathies to your entire family.

My condolences to all of Gene's family. His wife, children and brothers. I was lucky to grow up being a part of the group of New Hyde Parker's. And was lucky to know Gene.
From early on Gene was a great athelete and a nice guy. All through elementary school, middle school and high school, everyone knew and liked Gene. He was a good person and that came across in everthing he did.

Sometimes in life you are lucky enough to be at that exact moment when someone of extraordinary ability gives you a glimpse of all that is possible and know that you are witnessing something incredible. For me, it was being a friend and teammate of Gene’s in high school during our incredible football season. Not only a great leader and inspiration as one of our team captains, but in any position he played, whether it be fullback, linebacker or place kicker, you knew you were seeing something incredible at that moment. His great strength and size were only dwarfed by the size of his heart. He was a true gentleman and we are all better for having known him.
