I can still hear those high heels clicking down the hall at the newly designated 6th grade melting pot, William R. Bowie Grade School. Miss Chupil was a force I had never before encountered. To a rather slow-on-the-uptake introverted school phobic, she was a terrifying personage. Demanding, but fair and so caring. The first of those precious few educators encountered in one’s lifetime whose imprint stuck. (I have always remembered to say “thank you” before leaving the bus when someone has taken me on a class trip to the nation’s capitol...) Of course, by school end, the best. A unique individual that shaped me well beyond history, writing, and arithmetic and the first of sadly, few, to demand critical thinking. I am forever grateful.

I am so thankful for Ms. Chupil's decades of service to teaching the bright young minds at Manor Oaks. She was one of my favorite teachers when I was a student there many years ago. I am sure the same holds true for other students as well. I will never forget her kindness and how she encouraged me to "write, write, write." I still write to this day. Thank you, Ms. Chupil, for everything. May you rest in peace.

Miss Chupil was an extraordinary teacher. She inspired a level of intellectual curiosity and challenge in my sixth-grade class that I'd not experienced before. That year of elevated learning was a perfect transition between grades one through five and junior high school.
Miss Chupil's kindness is what I remember most clearly. For the first time, I took a school bus from my neighborhood to a larger school and was blended in a classroom with students from several elementary schools. Socially that was intimidating and I was always grateful for the stability she provided. Her patience and encouragement meant so much to me.
